I'm not sure where to start with this one. The Klippers drubbed the Weyburn Red Wings 9-2 tonight to take a 2-0 series lead in a game that ended with some very ugly incidents, on the ice, on the benches and off the ice.
Tensions had been building up throughout the third period, and the Klippers had a 8-2 lead when everything rose to the surface.
With 1:27 left in the third, Wings defenceman T.J. Wees lined up Jesse Mysiorek in the corner with a brutal hit. He took several strides toward Mysiorek (only playing his second game back from a groin injury), who was facing the boards the entire time trying to win the puck, and plastered him from behind. Mysiorek's face may have hit the dasher on the way down. I couldn't tell for sure, but his head was awfully close to it.
Jesse is spending the night in the hospital and I would expect he'll be out for some time. No firm update as of yet though. The good news is he was at least well enough to send out a couple of tweets from the hospital.
After the hit, Wees tried to go after Cody Lund and there was a fracas in front of the Weyburn net. In the middle of that, everyone's attention shifted to the benches where the sticks were flying. That went on for a good two minutes.
I couldn't tell from my angle, but upon watching the video after the game, Wings agitator Lucas Ulmer was the first to swing his stick, reaching around the glass to do so. His stick hit Klipper trainer Neal Bruetsch on the top of the head; fortunately he was okay.
Four or five Wings (including Blake Kirkham, who swung his stick well over his head and then brought it down) continued at this, swinging at Taylor Wasden and Riley Down, along with a couple other players who were on the ice. The Klipper players had their sticks up as well, but weren't rearing back to take big swings; it looked to me like they were merely protecting themselves.
It took probably 10 minutes to sort all this out. The upshot was Wees got 2, 5 and a game for roughing and charging. Ulmer got a gross misconduct (presumably from starting the stick war) and Jesse Ross got a 10. For the Klippers, Down was given a gross and Lund got two for roughing.
Justin McDonald entered the game in the final minute because Rockie Zinger was worried the Wings might take a run at Cahill.
Wees racked up 23 PIMs tonight, including three minors before his hit on Mysiorek. Ulmer's gross was his third penalty of the night, and he also got away with punching Casey Rogers after the whistle early in the second. Both players will surely face suspensions.
As for the game that broke out in the middle of the violence (imagine that!), the Klippers led 2-1 after a dominant first period and the floodgates opened in the second, with the home side ahead 6-2 after two.
A charged-up Andrew Dommett led the way with two goals and an assist. If there were a bump of the game during the playoffs, he would have gotten that too for a massive hit he laid on his first shift. Dommett was a constant thorn in the Wings' side tonight.
Johnny Calkins had a goal and three assists, including perfect centering passes to set up both of Dommett's goals. Calkins' tally came when he tried to go cross-slot to Dommett but the puck went off a Weyburn skate and in.
The other goals came from Braeden Adamyk (1-2), Sanfred King, Ryan Elliot (1-1), Wheaton King (1-1), Mysiorek and John Sonntag (1-2). The goal credited to Sonntag looked like it was actually scored by Riley Down, who had a tremendous game tonight.
Sonntag, Leedahl and Flanagan were all on top of their game tonight in what was a very strong all-around effort from the Klipper blueline.
Drew George and Brock Appleyard had the Weyburn goals. George cut the Klipper lead to 2-1 late in the first when he tipped a power play point shot from Kevin Morrison. Appleyard scored on a man-advantage late in the second when he was given all kinds of space to snap a wrister past Sean Cahill from the high slot.
You have to believe the Wings were missing goalie Mitch Kilgore (flu) tonight. Riley Hengen did what he could, but he was powerless against the Klipper attack on all cylinders. Kilgore is the Wings' MVP, I think, and they need him back for Game 3 to have a shot at getting back in the series.
The shots tonight were a whopping 58-26 for the Klippers.
After the game (and this is what I was told by coaches and bystanders, as I missed the first part of it) there was a fracas in the hallway as Weyburn coach Dwight McMillan allegedly grabbed and/or hit Klippers volunteer Kim Leonard. When I arrived on the scene, local police were restraining McMillan and telling him that if he said another word, he'd be going to jail for the night.
Again, I didn't witness how it started, but if the reports are true, there's no place for that. This is the second time in the last month that Dwight has been involved in an incident in the WCEC hallway. On February 4, when the Wings beat the Klippers 5-4 in OT, someone spit on McMillan in the hallway following the game.
Still have any doubt that these teams hate each other?
Interviews
You'll want to hear these as Dommett and Zinger both had some harsh words for the shenanigans in the third period.
Andrew Dommett: two goals
Johnny Calkins: four points
Rockie Zinger
They hit Bruetschy?!?!? Those bastards!

Wow, You should change your name to the Kindersley Angels. I've been told from several people Calkins started the stick swinging when he speared a Wing in the face.
ReplyDelete& Mcmillan had every right to be pissed. Someone was throwing stuff at him & the rest of the coaching staff after the game. Last time he was there they were spitting on him, This time throwing stuff. Lots of class Kindersley!! Agreed was a stupid hit by Wees, Don't like to see anyone get hurt.
But in your interviews Zinger especially, Made it sound like the Kindersley Angels were perfectly innocent, & then proceeded to cut down the Red Wing organization. He'll be lucky if he coaches another 30 yrs. if he has 1/8 of the success Mac has had.
Pretty big words for a rookie coach, See you in Weyburn.
I have been reading and listening to all the comments. I must say they are fair comments. Rockie talks about the Weyburn crew being classless, of course we are assuming they had class in the first place.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately as you look back over the career of Dwight McMillan, you might find longevity, and success, But what you won't find is class. McMillan is cut out of the same cloth as the Norm Johnson's and Paddy Ginnels of this world, They are of the old school and can't change their ways. Win at all cost, iif you can't win "KILL THE OPPOSTION" There is no place in today's hockey for the likes of him. He his bench staff and the players involved should be suspended for the balance of the season, he should also be charged with assault, and the team should be fined $10,000 for their actions.
But don't hold your breath, this leaque, it's president and governors really don't have the gonads to do what it will really take to deal with the problem correctly
If Dwight McMillan is the standard by which all others will be judged then the league is in a sad state. Dwight, why don't you go to your room at the home, put a blanket over your legs, pull out your scrapbook and keep telling yourself how great you are.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone is saying the Klippers are angels but let's be very clear that they didn't start the @#$% show last night - Wees did with that gutless check from behind.
Wow, & not a word said about the "Angels"
ReplyDeleteDid you ever think if you had decent security there, Your fans sould be charged for spitting on him or throwing things at them after the last game. If someone was spitting on you & throwing things would you not retaliate? Probably not cause your angels..lol. Good on ya Mac, Way to stand up for yourself.
Also from some people who were at the game said Calkins did the first stick work that started the swinging.
Maybe he should be charged $10,000 & charged with assault?
Probably not though, According to Zingy & the rest of you, Your Angels can't do no wrong.
weyburn is full of gutless pieces of %#%#. having your coach yell to your players to kill them is very classy id say...? wees's took 7 strides and clearly saw mysireks number the entire time and elbowed him in the head.. weyburn should be classed a jr b team, have fun getting swept. get ur brooms ready for Tuesday and Wednesday
ReplyDeleteHockey is hockey, what happens in the game, is dealt with in the game, and stays in the game. Special needs or not, he should be treated equal right? if he wanted to interfere behind the benches then he should have known some of the consequences that might follow. as for the hit, I agree it was dirty, but the stick swinging was started by Calkins it's on video.
ReplyDeleteWho said Kimmer was doing anything behind the benches? I haven't heard anything like that. Regardless of what happened beforehand, laying hands on a fan or volunteer is a cardinal no-no and Dwight should have known better.
ReplyDeleteAs for the stick swinging, I don't know what went on before the video swung to the benches, but I saw the video and the first swing clearly came from Lucas Ulmer.
My experience in hockey is that a team winning by a lopsided margin really has no reason to start the type of nonsense that occurred last night. I wasn't there but why would Kindersley start dirty play when they are dominating a game and about to go up 2-0 on a playoff series?
ReplyDeleteThank goodness ulmer got suspended. He is another problem waiting to happen. Has anyone thought that fans could stick up for their team too. When the other team is going after your team you feel like you want to do something.
ReplyDeleteTo the two bright sparks from Weyburn. McMillan either cannot control his bench, or he instructed his players to do what they did. Eitherway he and the organization are responsible for them, and should be dealt with accordingly.
ReplyDeleteAs for how it started it. It was Wees hit on Mysoriuk not somone swinging a stick. Everything that transpired afer that was the result of that incident, so don't try and suggest that someone or something else caused it.
With regards the fans, they have a right to be angry, just as the angels in Weyburn would be.
As far as Caulkins is concerned, as a Kindersley fan if the Weyburn players don't like what he does, then go toe to toe with him., Don't take the cheap way out and cream someone from behind.
See you in Weyburn Mac, you class act you
Josh, your 7:29 post is a little confusing, as you dont know what went on before the video swung to the bench, but you seen that Lucas started it? Maybe the video didn't catch the first swing. From what I hear Johnny Calkins walked down the bence and threw the first swing... lets see how long it takes for him to start bragging about it.
ReplyDelete8:43: I was responding to someone who had said a Calkins spear was visible on the video. Sorry for the confusion. I was basically saying that nothing from Calkins was on tape, and that when watching the video the first thing you see is Ulmer swinging his stick.
ReplyDeleteNot saying Calkins or someone from the Klipper bench didn't start it - but I haven't seen or heard anything to back that up.
What kind of security do you have in your rink? Apparently NOT good.
ReplyDelete& has a Kindersley angel never layed a dirty hit?
& yes it was the idiot calkins that took the first swing, everyone seems to be quiet about that?? didn't think ulmer started it, he's not that kind of player.
Don't get your broom out just yet :)
No wander the Cowie boys walked out on mcmillan, they didn't want to put up with his crap.
ReplyDelete- John Henry
Hey Josh, Isn't fans throwing things in the hallways at coaches & spitting on them considered a cardinal no-no??
ReplyDeleteYou don't even know the reason the cowies walked out JH, & if that was the reason why wouldn't they have walked out 2 yrs. ago?
ReplyDeleteAlso after they walked out why did they ask to come back?
I don't care if you are a volunteer or not. The best thing to do is to walk away from the situation. He obviously said something to Dwight and Dwight reacted
ReplyDeleteKindersley should have had security in place BEFORE this game after the crap that happened last time. The fact they didn't should mean a fine from the league.
It seems as if this team has gotten a little too cocky for themselves since Mr. Zinger took over with their after-game celebrations and now this. Karma will come back and you know what payback is.
David in Saskatoon
That crap is one of the reasons the Cowie boys left. There was no respect by Mac for his players. An old man with no idea of how to relate to the younger generation. The Cowie boys are probably laughing now. Maybe some of the other players are thinking they should have left too.
ReplyDelete10:58: Spitting is most definitely a cardinal no-no and I've mentioned that several times. Can't really comment on throwing things because I didn't see that and not sure if it happened, but that's obviously uncalled for as well.
ReplyDelete11:33: The team does have security in place. I don't know if they were on the scene or what role they played in this as I wasn't there at the beginning.
7:23- I am both baffled and down right angry with the comment about special needs people. He was banging his drum and cheering for his favorite hockey team. He definitely deserved to get his glasses broken and someone to lay their hands on him, wow (please note the thick thick sarcasm). There is absolutely no reason for a coach to do such a thing, especially to someone with special needs. Treated as equal? yes, absolutely, this situation is a little different. Are you honestly blaming this on the the poor man that was cheering for his hockey team? That comment honestly makes me ill. The hit was dirty, how can someone say it wasn't? If my buddy got nailed like that my blood would be boiling. Just as Dommett stated, if you wanna throw them down anyone on the Klippers team would be more than happy to go. No one is saying the Klippers are angels, that hit against Mysriok was dirty, that is what sparked these unfortunate events. Lesson here is that if you're losing by a lot, you should turn into classless acts and start injuring players, wow, that is embarrassing. Absolutely get the brooms out for Tuesday and Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteAs a Weyburn fan that was there, I say Wees should be suspended for his hit on Mysorek (sp), but if Calkins doesn't spear Ulmer in the face then this doesn't boil over. The SJHL should review the video and give Calkins and Wees three games each.
ReplyDeleteAs for the "fan". I don't care if he is a special needs person or not. He shouldn't be around the bench. If he is the stands, great, but in the bench area. He's asking for trouble whether he knows it or not. That is ridiculous! Someone needs to be watching him!
3 games for that check from behind? Seriously, only 3 games? Maybe if it was an accidental collision that happened in the blink of an eye but that was deliberate and you know it. Shows how much respect Wees has for the game of hockey. Put him on the next Greyhound leaving town, he should be done for the year.
ReplyDeleteThe Kindersley fans seem to be avoiding the fact Calkins took the first shot, Probably because they saw it happen. & the leauge is reviewing it again. Calkins should be suspended as well.
ReplyDeleteAre you saying that Calkins speared Ulmer from the bench right after Mysoriek was hit?
ReplyDeleteMy question is why after the hit if it was that bad and it was nobody from the Klippers jumped Wees as any other team sure would have. Also if you watch the video the sticks are swung in the direction of the Redwings high in the air.Apparently the league is reviewing the incident and who started it as I emailed the pres and he said they were not done and are investigating the security issues brought up by the wings. So KLIPPERS bring your halo heads and harps and lets get it on.Funny how Klippers were at the top of the league in fines, suspensions and penalty minutes if they are such angels according to the little dweeb Zinger.
ReplyDeleteYes calkins did spear him right after the hit, i heard it from the fans. That is why the league is reviewing it.
ReplyDeleteEnough about the cowies, they're gutless cowards who can't handle a tough coach, they left their friends and team mates stranded when things were rough, they don't deserve any respect. They never asked to come back, and no one would have wanted them back. The wees hit was dirty, but Calkins started the spearing, I legitimately saw it from the booth. It will be interesting to see what will happen in games 3 and 4.
ReplyDeleteI have a question for 1:55. Why is it the responsibility of Kindersley's security to police a bunch of immature Weyburn coaches and players. I'm sure the pres was just waiting for your email it will make his decision much easier.
ReplyDeleteAnd with regards the video, i suggest you actually watch it all, not just the part being shown on the Weyburn facebook page, when the sticks were swinging in front of the benches. Had you been at the game, which from your comments i'm sure you were not, you would have seen the first stick was swung by a Weyburn player
over the back of the Kindersley bench, and made contact with the Kindersley trainer.
The real question that needs to be asked is " Does McMillan have control of his bench"? If he doesn't, he must have sent Wees and caused the rest of the gong show.
Let's not forget his attack of Kindersley's assistant trainer. I can assure you his excuse that he was picking him up was absolute bullshit!
If he gets his jollies beating on people with disabilities, he should have stopped at telemiracle on the way home, the tub of lard could have had a field day.
Bring it on he says, WHAT A MORON!
