Exner goes home

As mentioned by Brenden on his blog yesterday, it is true that Tanner Exner has left the Kindersley Klippers.

From what I have been told, Exner informed Larry Wintoneak of his decision on Sunday night.

It seems there are personal issues involved, but I will not get into that here.

Exner had been pencilled in beside Sanfred King right from the start of training camp, but he struggled early in the year and eventually was dropped to the fourth line.

He had started to turn it around on the scoresheet recently, including three points in four road games last week.

Exner was acquired along with Lance Tabin for Travis Eggum midway through last season. Eggum, who wanted more ice time, is now third in the SJHL scoring race. With the departure of Exner, that deal isn't looking so hot now. That said, I don't believe Eggum would have gotten the opportunity here that he now has in La Ronge. This is a deep squad.

Exner's time in Kindersley will be remembered more than anything for that dramatic goal he scored last year with four seconds left in Game 6 in Yorkton, sending that series to a Game 7 in Eston. It was the definition of clutch, and it gave the team new life after some heartbreaking losses earlier in the series.

All of a sudden the Klippers are down to 13 forwards, along with seven defencemen and two goalies. Perhaps a little more trimming than Larry would have liked. I would not be surprised to see another '91 or '92 bottom-six forward brought in soon.

I spoke with Larry Monday afternoon about the road trip and the showcase, as well as the release of goaltender Alex Peck. I will try to get that up tonight, but it is a busy night for me so we'll see.

  1. That was a fabulous goal and will be remembered for a long time. Good luck to you.

  2. Couldn't agree more. I think that goal and the Calkins OT goal in Game 5 vs. Estevan two years ago are the ones that stick out most for me.

  3. Wish Tanner nothing but the best, hopefully it wasn't strictly his experience in Kindersley that led to his decision. Most times I saw him he had a smile on his face and what a great smile it was!

  4. eggum isnt good enough to get icetime on a mediocre team in kindersley because it is too deep? yet he is good enough to play lots on a great team in Laronge? Your comment is ridiculous. Time to put away the depth chart and ghost roster and put the right fricking kids on the ice. Who cares about depth. If a kid is the 3rd leading scorer on a superior team, then he surely could have been a key guy in ktown. Larry's philosophies are okay and he is a smart guy, but he out thinks himself and totally overanalyses everything.

  5. What a ridiculous comment is Laronge not at the top of the standings while KK is strugling to stay at.500. Who is the defending champ. Maybe theres a reason the Klippers have the poorest attendance in the league.

  6. Before you come out with your pitchforks, did anyone say Kindersley was better than La Ronge? No. Now. Do you think Eggum would be playing on the Dommett-Calkins-Adamyk line? No, that line would not be broken up. As a result, he would not be getting the same ice time here as he does in La Ronge. It's not a comment on how good he or his team are, it's simple logic.

  7. Maybe Calkins would not have been on the Eggum, Dommet, Adamyk line.....Get through your depth chart.

He clearly can score and be more productive than the latter two.

The logic is: Eggum is doing better than the line you think he can't be on.

  8. Nice to see Eggum's relatives still follow the Klippers! Bottom line is he asked for the trade because he wasn't willing to accept a role other than top 3 minutes. Glad it worked out for him.

  9. Not Eggum's relative.

Just an Ice Wolves fan who sees the talent.

  10. Eggum is gonna take calkins spot on the first line. Can eggum even do a crossover let alone play center. The (s)kid was a cancer and Kindersley is better off without him.

  11. Eggum isn't taking the first line spot without an injury. He is a good player and would have helped us if he wanted to stay. The word cancer might be a little harsh but once a player doesn't want to be here it is better they leave.

Larry is just trying to win games. He doesn't have time to baby all the kids that come through here. The team has to win or the coach gets fired. That is the same everywhere except Toronto, sorry Leaf fans, don't delete this Josh. :)

  12. I am thinking the cancer on the Klippers is none other than your coach. We had problems with him in La Ronge and had to turf him to save the franchise. Eggum has been nothing but an up-beat, fantastic addition to the Ice Wolves. Eggum played 2 1/2 seasons with the Klippers and he wanted a change so he asked for a trade, and Larry accommodated him. Eggum said nothing bad about Larry, the town, or his teammates, yet Klipper fans have the audacity to try to besmirch him. I really don't understand it. All I know is since he joined us he has been a great teammate and I don't know one player on this team or last year's team that don't consider him a friend. Bob Beatty thinks highly of Eggum and the role he is playing on the team.

  13. Further to my comment of December 12 .... when I'm right, I'm right! Larry's firing proves my previous statement.
